CTAN would like to give a shout out to all of our members wrapping up their summer programs! Our member agencies are doing some fun and innovative activities to help keep kids engaged, active and learning in June and July. This summer, CTAN executive leaders visited several programs on National Summer Learning Day, to check out and highlight what’s happening in out of school time programs during the summer months. Follow the NSLD link to watch a special video from Michelle Obama emphasizing the importance of summer learning in our communities across the nation.
At Cedars International Academy ACE program, 3rd grade students were working on maker projects, creating products to solve every day
problems in their lives. Equipped with thousands of Legos and their task at hand, students worked closely together in small teams to brainstorm their ideas and then build together. Whether it was an item to fix a leaky roof of their house, a product that would help their dog reach their food easier or a chair made for exceptionally tall people—all groups were using impressive communication skills, practicing patience with one another and sharing roles, and seemed to easily work out challenges together.

Creative Action students in K-5 presented for parents and community members at their end of summer showcase. Students performed their original musicals, commercial skits, and discussed their experiences in creating their artwork and performances. Colorful posters and dioramas displayed around the room share what the students learned about teamwork, cooperation and communication during their time together.
Extend-a-Care students were busy laughing and learning about ancient Egyptian practices on NSLD. This year, the camp was focusing on thematic learning and taking the students around the world to learn different topics and culture. Parents were also at the center of camp, and they participated in student showcases, weekly newsletters, and more. Thank you to all of the camps that made summer learning meaningful!
